Rare Breeds Society of New Zealand

Our story.

A small farm with a big job — keeping some of New Zealand's rarest breeds going, and sharing their stories with everyone who visits.

How it started

Keeping rare bloodlines alive.

We're members of the Rare Breeds Society in Canterbury. Over the last seven years, we've gathered various rare-breed breeding groups from around New Zealand here at Glenlothian Farm.

Glenda joined the Rare Breeds Society in Canterbury in March 2013 and is an active committee member — helping with the A&P show animal display and other annual events, and playing her part in keeping selected bloodlines going.

The last five years have been busy building relationships, largely through the nationally recognised Rare Breeds Society, closely associated with Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. Some of these breeds have fewer than 200 animals left in the country.

Why we do it

An education park of unique animals found in New Zealand.

We continue to develop an educational experience around our rare breeds and the story of the widespread Bennetts wallaby pest. We also host school and community groups, run craft classes and birthday parties — please call us on 021 032 8817 to book.

Come and see for yourself

Meet the rare ones.

The best way to understand the story is to come and stand in it.
